Chapter 13
For the next few nights my training was limited to light activities, as Gigi wanted me to spend more time dealing with my inner demon. I spent more time in her office plugging away on new meditations, hypnosis, and even a ritual to bind Gladius deeper inside. It was all well and good, but I knew that the magic propelling Gladius forward was stronger, for her darkness had percolated for centuries.
My team knew about my visions, but was not as concerned as the mortals, so after a few weeks, when the demon was back under wraps, I continued my routine with them. I had worked tirelessly with the other vampires, doing whatever it took to become an asset to my team. My life up until that point had never required that I even attempt to be a team player, so the whole idea was a new concept for me. I did my best not to push the others away. Now that we knew that the Brotherhood was connected to the vampire world, our training had become more strenuous.
My nights were mixed in with the insights I continued to glean from Gladius. The more I worked with Gigi, the easier it was to fool Gladius into thinking she was in charge. She truly thought that she had control over my bodyâ¦that I had simply given up control and let her darkness fill my existence. Gigi had cast another hypnotic spell that had been the perfect illusion, an invisible curtain that let me see into her thoughts, but kept her far away from my own. So far, I had learned that the Brotherhood was at a quiet point; no new information had been shared, nor why they were hiding from the world right now when they had such large goals to achieve.
That night, the training had gone a little differently. Justice and Vivian were nowhere to be found and I was left in the empty gym with Alexanderâs brooding eyes. What was it about him that made me feel so uncomfortable in my own shoes? At first, I thought it was the fact that I carried around a demon inside me, that perhaps it had made me much like a leper in his eyes. He had not voiced any concerns about my symbiotic existence with Gladius. In fact, having her inside would make it easier to learn more about the demon world. It was an advantage for once; something I never thought possible, for Gladius had always been a hindrance to my life.
Every time I tried to parry the thrust of his sword, he knocked me on my backside. When I tried to leap over him, he would capture an appendage and twist me so far off course that I would crash into the wall on the other side. I was thankful that any wounds I sustained in our combat would heal quickly, for he was driving me hard tonight. With each punch and kick, he met me half way in a frenzy I had never seen before.
